Downstream Bandwidth Management for Emerging DOCSIS-based Networks

چکیده
In this dissertation, we consider the downstream bandwidth management in the context of emerging DOCSIS-based cable networks. The latest DOCSIS 3.1 standard for cable access networks represents a significant change to cable networks. For downstream, the current 6 MHz channel size is replaced by a much larger 192 MHz channel which potentially can provide data rates up to 10 Gbps. Further, the current standard requires equipment to support a relatively new form of active queue management (AQM) referred to as delay-based AQM. Given that more than 50 million households (and climbing) use cable for Internet access, a clear understanding of the impacts of bandwidth management strategies used in these emerging networks is crucial. Further, given the scope of the change provided by emerging cable systems, now is the time to develop and introduce innovative new methods for managing bandwidth. With this motivation, we address research questions pertaining to next generation of cable access networks. The cable industry has had to deal with the problem of a small number of subscribers who utilize the majority of network resources. This problem will grow as access rates increase to gigabits per second. Fundamentally this is a problem on how to manage data flows in a fair manner and provide protection. A well known performance issue in the Internet, referred to as bufferbloat, has received significant attention recently. High throughput network flows need sufficiently large buffer to keep the pipe full and absorb occasional burstiness. Standard practice however has led to equipment offering very large unmanaged buffers that can result in sustained queue levels increasing packet latency. One reason why these problems continue to plague cable access networks is the

On fairness and application performance of active queue management in broadband cable networks
We evaluate the performance of modern delay-based active queue management (AQM) algorithms in downstream DOCSIS 3.0 cable environments. Our simulation-based study involves scenarios that include tiered service levels and application workloads that include FTP, HTTP-based adaptive streaming (HAS), VoIP, and web traffic. Our results show that AQM maintains target queuing delays and consequently p...
متن کاملMaximizing Bandwidth Utilization in Downstream DOCSIS 3.0 Channel Bonded Networks
The addition of bonding groups in DOCSIS 3.0 allowed the bandwidth to be increased to the end user. Max-min fair packet scheduling provides for fairness among those users, but due to the restrictions of the bonding groups, available bandwidth may go unused. This research investigates the dynamic remapping of the flows to allow more effective util ization of the system bandwidth. An online algor...
متن کاملValidating an ‘ns’ Simulation Model of the DOCSIS Protocol
The number of households and businesses using HFC cable networks for Internet access is rapidly approaching 20million in the United States. The cable industry has standardized on a single MAC and physical layer standard, the Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS). We have implemented a simulation model of the DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 MAC and physical layer using the ‘ns’ simulation packa...
متن کاملOn the Performance Modelling and Optimisation of DOCSIS HFC Networks
The DOCSIS protocol defines the MAC and physical layer operations governing two-way transmission of voice, video and multimedia data over HFC cable networks, thus constituting a complex system with many interdependent parameters. This tutorial employs simulation and analytic methodologies for the performance modelling and optimisation of DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 HFC networks with particular focus on the ...
متن کاملThe Interaction Between the DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 MAC Protocol and TCP Application Performance
The deployment of data-over-cable broadband Internet access continues to unfold throughout the world. While there are competing technologies, the Data over Cable (DOCSIS) 1.1/2.0 effort is emerging as the single standard. There has been little research exploring the impact that the DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 MAC and physical layers has on the performance of Internet applications. We have developed a model ...
